New Track: Memoryhouse - Quiet America
This new track from Memoryhouse, ‘Quiet America’, is set to appear on their forthcoming re-recorded, re-mixed and re-mastered version of their two year old ‘The Years E.P’ which was self-released in 2009. Its just one of the new songs on this expanded edition, which we’ll see released via Sub Pop on September 13th. Their sound has always been that of sombre and glacial take on eery 90s pop music - you can hear quite clearly a ringing influence from Mercury Rev, or indeed Slowdive in its wistful guitar tones and oppressive classical orchestration. ‘Quiet America’ is even more disconsolate than usual, floating forth upon the clouded reverberant mist of piano chords in to something both dreamy and dreary simultaneously, which dies a little prematurely as it is cut painstakingly and evocatively short.

Memoryhouse, without doubt the finest purveyors of icy dream pop music in Toronto, possibly even the whole of Canada, are set to release a re-recorded, remixed and re-mastered version of their breakthrough EP, The Years, via Sub Pop this September 13th. A blog post on their excellent Tumblr page reveals how the band approached the first ever physical pressing of the EP in a “manner that is consistent with memoryhouse’s noises and idiosyncrasies while broadening [its] sonic pallet”, not something, according to the band, which the term “re-issue” could fully convey.
The Years EP will retain its full original track-listing, but with two crucial additions, that of new compositions “Modern, Normal” and “Quiet America”, the former of which is being offered as a free download in anticipation not only of The Years’ first ever physical pressing, but also of their imminent US tour and date at the CMJ Music Marathon in October. In the same blog post, the band further invoke excitement in the onlooker, speaking of the clock inching “ever closer” towards Memoryhouse’s first LP.
Hear a gorgeous and second new track entitled “I Won’t Follow You Back Home” (which one might deduce as being from the upcoming LP), performed live in New York’s Pianos venue. Very reassuring to see that abstract, resonating vocal and glacial instrumental sound realised so confidently into a live setting. Watch below and prepare to be impressed.
