This Music Wins #32 on Resonance 104.4 FM 21/01/2012

On Sunday I made my way down to the Netaudio event at the Roundhouse, a yearly event, conference, broadcast and live music convention for which my commissioned piece, a This Music Wins special outlining my thoughts on the stylistic future of experimental music on the internet, went out at 4.30pm via Roundhouse Radio and Resonance 104.4 FM London. Though trains prevented me from catching the headlining ‘Nurse With Wound’ at KOKO that evening, I did manage to catch an interesting set from abrasively captioned ‘Cuntbucket’ - who played a seemingly improvised and jazz-infused noise piece for around 40 minutes up in the open space. This week’s show featuring the lossless noise pop from San Francisco band Young Prisms, I Don’t Get Much from their debut Kanine Records release ‘Friends For Now’. Also the spiritualist rework of Matthew Dear’s Slowdance by German producer How To Dress Well, and a track from High High’s upcoming record due 2011. I must have posted three hundred times on This Music Wins, but I can say with full confidence that I have never posted a ‘seance’ until now. The term, here used in place of the rather trivial and uninspiring term ‘remix’, can be loosely defined as an attempt to communicate with spirits - and in so far as definitions will take us, the haunting and other-worldly rendition of Matthew Dear’s ‘Slowdance’ track by the young German Philosopher Thomas Krell, perhaps better known by his musical pseudonym, ‘How To Dress Well’, certainly seems to match up. Originally featured on TMW last year for his Jackson sampling drug anthem ‘Ecstasy With Jojo’, Krell takes that crackling lo-fi niche which he has created for himself an makes something a little more downtempo, reflective, and disengaging. This is the music of depth, introvert moods and dark evenings alone on cold winter nights - it is the musical realisation of a deep and innate desire for truth and meaning which even the reflective, soul-searching individual may find impossible to grasp.

The original Matthew Dear track first appeared on 2010’s Black City, and will see the light of day once more as part of the ‘Slowdance EP’, due April 5th via the aptly titled Ghostly International. Look out for ‘Slowdance’ as reworked by How To Dress Well, a new song by name of ‘Innh Dahh’ and more songs transposed directly from Black City.
