This Music Wins Review Of The Year 2011 on Resonance FM

After writing an albums of the year list longer than probably all my posts across the entire year put together, putting together a 90 minute radio show for Resonance FM seemed like a breeze. A.A Bondy, who is set to release his forthcoming Believers on September 13th. This one’s called The Heart Is Willing, which you can pick up for $10 in the Fat Possum sale.

2. Tune-yards - Bizness (MP3)

4AD Records released Tune-Yards, who I missed earlier in the year. This is loose funk vocal with a flailing brass section which creeps up. 

3. Blood Diamonds - Grins (Deptford Goth remix) (MP3)

Deptford Goth’s take on Blood Diamonds new single Grins, set to drop Monday on 7”. (via)

4. Pigeons - Dead Echo (MP3)

Pigeons’ the dual conception of two members of No Neck Blues Band and Black Twig Pickers with Dead Echo - glitchy tape acoustic music.

Experimental noise from Garrincha & The Stolen Elk - set to tour the US this Autumn.

6. Mirror Mirror - Interiors (MP3)

Surf punk and psychedelia influence Mirror Mirror’s debut LP ‘Interiors’ - experience the very TVOTR-esque title track below.

A strong week indeed for experimental music, starting with an earlier post we made on London producer Deptford Goth’s new single “No Man”, which you can find here. Below we play an older part of his collecton, the Moby-esque “Real Love Fantasy”.

We caught up with Ducktails at Field Day 2011, and were pleasantly surprised to find him band-less (though retrospectively this might have been predictable) and commandeering the electronics solo. Today we play the B-side from his A-side single with Animal Collective’s Panda Bear “Killin’ The Vibe”. Both extremely catchy, beware.

Some research in to venues in the North of England which I’ve been concerning myself with in recent weeks led me to discover that Dirty Beaches has recently toured with WU LYF. Now what a show that would have been! This lo-fi, heavily stylistic 80s revival, and above-all, filmic arrangement is intense and evocative - lead single “Lone Runner” dropped earlier this week, as detailed here.

Dirty Beaches - Sweet 17 (MP3)

A song from little known project Eternity Zone, which serves as a track surprisingly pro-active despite its titles’ connotations. Its only after the three minutes have set in that its density and complexity reveal themselves as actively disengaging. Find them on Soundcloud.

Porcelain Raft signed to Secretly Canadian earlier this year - and Memoryhouse have a big label to match, the latter release a re-recorded, re-mastered and re-released version of The Years EP on Sub Pop next month, and alongside that release comes an excellent remix they’ve done for Porcelain Raft. Closing today’s show is a piece from the droning side project of Mat Cothran’s excellent Coma Cinema project, which I’ve been an advocate of for some months now. Elvis Depressedly, who we wrote about in detail earlier this week, is dark and oppressive, and warrants repeated background listening. An interesting angle to pursue, but one which haunts you at the times you least expect it. Download below.

New Track: Deptford Goth - No Man

My discovery of Merok Records was one of the few good things which came out of The Big Pink’s short time in the spotlight a year or two ago. One half of the duo, Milo Cordell, is the C.E.O of the label, which has built itself a strong repertoire of RnB, soul and punk music these last couple of years, notably Teengirl Fantasy, Active Child, Titus Andronicus and Salem. The latest Merok release is the new EP from Deptford Goth, a London-based producer, who will release his 4-track ”YOUTH II” on 12” Vinyl on October 17th.

From that release, Altered Zones has directed attention to “No Man”, the most recent free download, typical of the Deptford Goth’s entry into soulful ambience, and carefully trodden trip-hop. Whispered, multi-layered vocals texturize an otherwise controlled emptiness from the outset, joined in time by an implied beat and calculated synthesised key jabs at the song’s midpoint. Very much on an uphill, yet subtle, development - as gospel influenced vocals and sporadically thrown drums converge, so does a streaming 90s trance-inducing hypnotic soft-synth sound which serves to collate a profound new level on which “No Man” might be appreciated.
