Comodo - Havana / Float
Oli Shilling’s downcast, occasionally overbearing R’n’B reminds me at least superficially of other projects I’ve been absorbed by over the past few months. With London’s emerging Halls it shares a deep, cavernous reverb - with Stew Green’s excellent Carnivals it shares not only a similar vibe in production but also its sporadic and rich sound-pallette. Perhaps its most definite formal similarities, though, are born from its eloquently unfolding allusions to early 90s R’n’B and sampled soul which echo aspects of Burial & Four Tet’s sound. ‘Havana’ without doubt draws heavily from the latter, but also shadows the fast-paced, monochrome sheen of Tri Angle Records and associated forces in modern electronic music (Holy Other, How To Dress Well, etc), albeit in its own distinctive style. An EP is in the works but as of yet, no details are attached. More info here.

UK producer Burial is set to drop his first original solo material in four years on Monday, in form of the 3-track ‘Street Halo 12” EP’ via Hyperdub Records. Kode9 and Benji B somewhat taint the two tracks which premiered on Radio 1 last night, but in the last few hours an MP3 of track ‘NYC’ (rumoured to be 20 minutes in length) has emerged to complete the set. The below version is only 7 minutes, but whether this is the one which will be on the shelves on Monday, or whether it is even the actual track “NYC” still remains to be seen. Whatever the below MP3 is, its Burial without a doubt, and makes for a lengthy down-tempo flavour of what is to drop next week.

This week’s show featuring the lossless noise pop from San Francisco band Young Prisms, I Don’t Get Much from their debut Kanine Records release ‘Friends For Now’. Also the spiritualist rework of Matthew Dear’s Slowdance by German producer How To Dress Well, and a track from High High’s upcoming record due 2011. A submission: we have StaG’s beautiful ‘Tired’, which I describe in full detail on Resonance this week, followed by a reminder of just how incredible Burial is in light of recent album announcements, and closing this week with New Beat from Toro Y Moi’s wonderful ‘Underneath The Pine’ which I got for my birthday. Enjoy.
[LISTEN TO RESONANCE FM SATURDAY @ 6.30]
Update: This show now goes out 2nd April.
