New LP: Sleeping Bags - Sleeping Bags
An interesting record before you’ve even turned it on, in that the whole LP was supposedly recorded in one take, something only rarely, and often unwisely, risked. Sleeping Bags thus aligns itself very much to the experimental shoegaze scene in California, and features a bunch of the scene’s local musicians in Matt Kivel and Jesse Kivel of Princeton and Kisses, Abe Burns of Gentle Hands, and Mark Nieto of COMBAT!. It takes its most dangerous risks in the generally fairly unharnessed world of guitars, pedals, loops and builds and the potential for it to go wrong is certainly a decisive factor in this album’s excellence.
Regardless of context, Sleeping Bags’ self-titled debut (released September 13th via Easter Everywhere) recalls the expert noise-manipulations Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine to the point of loud, rugged ambience. Free single ‘Pehr’ (ahead of the album’s shipping date on September 13th) is possibly the most free-reigning and unadulterated of the set, tearing through high speed overdrive with a furious reverberant sheen.
