New: Death Songs - Death Songs 10” EP
Slightly less morbid in style than the moniker might suggest, Nick Delffs (also of Castanets, and The Shaky Hands) is the man behind half Death Songs, a Portland-based indie pop outfit started with his Brother in 2007, set to drop their new self-titled EP on October 4th. From that release comes a rather unconventional Flamenco-influenced take in ‘Ophelia’, being offered as a free download by the band ahead of the 10” release on Post-Consumer.
An evening European shuffle sits contentedly beneath some distinctively American freak folk influences, the grainy recording style and flat percussion sound acting both as a homely feature but also in direct opposition to the jangling Eastern and African drums which serve to dissipate Death Songs style in to something more tribal. Their Dodos-like aesthetic has been drastically calmed in favour of a distanced lo-fi folk sound, which underpinned by a steady clucking rhythm nods as much to RnB and flamenco as a major influence as indie pop.
The self-titled EP will drop October 4th via Post-Consumer. ‘Ophelia’ premièred over at Magnet Magazine last month. Listen below.
