ALBUMS OF THE YEAR #6 TWIN SISTER - IN HEAVEN
Twin Sister’s Domino released debut album is a welcomed development from the abstract structures of their first two EPs, the new record providing a compression of their extended ambient tones into shorter, more concise and varied compositions. ‘In Heaven’ is an exercise in ethereality, Andrea Estella’s reserved vocal style constantly hinting, constantly implying and always thickening a layer of wonder and mystique which defines Twin Sister’s appeal and pertains to repeat listening, and in my case, obsession.
An 80s vibe and retro-sounding keyboards also join the new record, and at times it teeters dangerously close to synth-pop territory, other times engaging in some light funk, but most often in unknown territory, ‘Spain’ engaging in a Wild-Western-Film bullish introduction and jaunting vocal-rhythm interplay. ‘Gene Ciampi’ prides itself on its vibrato, ‘Bad Street’ on its cheesy funk-induced momentum, and the album as a whole on its suberb versatility, courage and pop sensibility. One of 2011’s great pop albums.
