Yoofs - 12
My friend Mike, from Bournemouth blog This Scene Isn’t Dead (who put on Bos Angeles’ first show in the Spring), also has a lo-fi project, by name of Yoofs. They’ve been turning out some glistening 60s numbers these past few months, enough to have earnt them shows with Real Estate and Spectrals last week. All from the comfort of Bournemouth’s famous blackwater caravan, that’s some pretty nice work.
This latest track, ‘12’, which they wrote and recorded over the weekend, has really won me over. They’ve dropped the pace and doubled the length of their usual sub-three minute formula, and cleared things up a little on the production end. The vocals are softly spoken but divorced a little more than usual from the shuffled punk chords beneath; leaving a haunting ‘… sleep forever’ lyric to stick in your head. The guitarist and pedal fanatic in me also wants to compliment that fluttering tremolo effect..
Coming up they’ve got dates in London with Fanzine and Woman’s Hour. Look out for those, Londoners.
